At this month’s regular meeting of the Hill Valley Women’s Temperance Group, guest speaker scientist Doctor E. Brown predicted futuristic telephones with no wires to connect them to the exchange. Discussing the new Hill Valley Telephone Exchange project launched by the Mayor last week, Brown enthused about the usefulness of communicative devices, highlighting a possibility of them becoming transportable.

The Doc explained to an enthralled audience how these telephones would be entirely cordless, meaning people could keep them in their automobiles or even carry them to work. However, he did warn that they would have to be the size of house bricks or bigger in order to accommodate a battery large enough to keep them powered.

During the question and comment time, one member of the audience asked: “why would anybody in their right mind want to carry a telephone around with them? Surely Hill Valley already has enough telephone booths to go round?” Given the new push to get residents talking (you can now call and leave a message for anyone in the directory) many of the locals present agreed. Perhaps the Doc’s more interested in the possibilities of science than the usefulness of what he’s inventing. At the Telegraph we don’t see why you’d ever need a wireless telephone to go about your business in the town or enjoy yourself at the fair and parade. Either way, it made for a fascinating afternoon.

Today, October 19th 1955, Mayor Red Thomas announced the launch of the revolutionary Hill Valley Telephone Exchange system, which will connect all residents in the wider Hill Valley area.

The phone directory and a personal messaging service will have your loved ones at the touch of a button. Also connected are the various Hill Valley businesses, where you can call Ruth, Lou, Roy or yours truly, The Hill Valley Telegraph.

Using a recent invention, the answering machine, you can even leave us a message if we’re out. This will come in handy for the Hill Valley Fair, when our editor and his staff are out and about to catch the latest news from Otis Peabody’s Twin Pines Ranch.

Are you connected yet? Let us know on out Submissions page!

Normally we hear ‘The bigger the better’ but it appears that is not the case for the size of radios. Roy’s Records reported to The Hill Valley Telegraph today that ‘The Word’s Smallest Radios’ (aka ‘Runabout’) have been flying off the shelves in store; in fact Roy’s Records have already had to restock the new technology.

“We have been very excited over here at Roy’s for the arrival of Motorola’s ‘Runabout’, which landed in store last week.”

“We have been very excited over here at Roy’s for the arrival of Motorola’s ‘Runabout’, which landed in store last week.” The ‘Runabout’ as it has been named, due to it’s portable casing and lightweight, comes in 5 different colors and can travel with you absolutely anywhere, due to it’s 100+ hours of battery life. Whether it’s down to the beach or up at the creek, the smaller model works surprisingly well on the go.

“It seemed hardly possible that something so small could deliver any kind of sound worth tuning into, but the powerful channels pull in stations loud and clear and manages to hold the sound real steady, just as good as if you were plugged in at home. The kids in Hill Valley are going crazy for these. If you’re interested then step on it before they all get snapped up,” Roy’s Record’s spokesman told our reporter. “Come and have a listen next time you roll into Roy’s for your slides.”
